about

It is a love song composed by John Maclean of Tiree (1827 – 1895). He wrote it as a love song from a woman’s perspective, as not many of those existed at that time. Malcolm Angus Macleod of Cape Breton recorded a variation of this tune, but I first heard it sung by Mary Smith from the Isle of Lewis.

lyrics

Nuair a bha mi’m chaileig ghoraich
Thug mi gaol ‘us gradh do’n oigear
Aig am bheil a’ phearsa bhòidheach
‘S cha ghradhaich mi ri m’bheo fear eile

Hi horò ‘s na horo eile
Hi horò ‘s na horo eile
Hi horò ‘s na horo eile
Gur tu mo luaidh ri’m bheò cha cheil mi.

Chaidh mi choill na crann’s nan gallan
Chuir mi sùil am fiừran maiseach
B’ann an Glaschu nam bừthan
A thug mi rừn do’n diùlnach fearail

Meur as grinn’ air peann a sgriobhas
‘S a chuir gleus air teudan fidhle
‘Se do cheòl da thogadh m’inntinn
An uair a bhithinn sgith fo smalan.

Ach tha mise ’n dùil ‘s an dochas
Gu’n tig an là ‘s am bi sinn comhla
‘S ma bhios tusa dileas domhsa
Cha ghràdhaich mi ri’m bheò fear eile.

Translation

When I was a young and foolish girl
I gave my love and affection
to a handsome youth,
and never will I love anybody else

Hi horo ….etc
You are my love and as long as I live I will not conceal this.

Those fingers that make a pen write so neatly:
that play a tune on the fiddle.
Your music would lift my soul
When I was sad and weary.

But I live in expectation and hope,
That the day will come when we will be united;
And if you remain faithful to me,
I will never love another man.
