about

MacCrimmon's Lament

During the Jacobite Rising in 1745, the chief of Clan MacLeod supported the Hanoverians against the Jacobites. As MacLeod's piper, Donald Ban MacCrimmon (Dòmnhall/Dòmnhull Bàn MacCruimein – bàn meaning fair-haired of Duncan Ban MacIntyre) took an active part in the conflicts against the Jacobite forces. Donald Ban was captured on December 23, 1745, following the Hanoverian defeat at the Battle of Inverurie (1745). During his captivity, the pipers in the Jacobite army went on strike, refusing to play while the "King of Pipers" was held captive. According to popular tradition, Donald Ban wrote his well-known lament, Cha till, cha till, cha till, MacCruimein (meaning "MacCrimmon will not, will not, will not return.), acknowledging his fate.

lyrics

Dh' aidh cèo nan stùc mu aodann chuilinn
'Us sheinn a' bheinn-shith a torman mulaid
Gorm shuilean ciuin san Dun a' sileadh
O'n thriall thu bhuainn 's nach till thu tuille

Sèist: Chorus (after each verse):

Cha till, cha till, cha till Maccrimman
An cogadh no sìth cha till e tuille
Le airgid no ni cha till Maccrimmain
Cha till e gu bràth gu la na cruinne

Tha'n fhairge fa-dhèoigh làn broin us mulaid
Tha'm bàta fo sheól, ach dhiult i siubhal
Tha gairich nan tonn le fuaim neo-shubhach
Ag ràbh gun d'fhalbh 'snach till thu tuille

Cha chluinnear do cheòl san Dun mu fheasgar
'Smac-talla nam mùr le muirn ga fhreagairt
Gach fleasgach us òigh, gun cheol gun bheadrach
O'n thriall thu bhuainn, 'snach till thu tuille

The mist of the stacks is about the face of the Cuillinn
And the fairy woman has sung her sad song
Gentle blues eyes in the fort are crying
Since you left, and will never return

He will never return MacCrioman
In war-time or peace he will never return
With neither money nor possessions he will return
He will never return 'til judgement day

The sea is full of sadness and sadness
The boat is under sail but refused to me
The noise of the waves, have an unhappy sound \
Saying you have one and will never return

Your music will not be heard in Dunvegan in the evening
And the echo of the ramparts mourning in answer
Each handsome man and maiden without music or merriment
Since you left us and never will return
