about

This is a piece of ‘mouth-music’ or a ‘puirt.’ These were songs to accompany dancing or amuse children and are therefore predominantly rhythmical—a ‘puirt à beul’; literally a tune out of a mouth. Stories and small incidents would be woven into attractive melodies. There are hints here at a Lewis origin. A young girl is singing about her boyfriend who is coming over the sea to marry her and one of the reasons she loves him the most is because he doesn’t drink!
